History of GPT
United States Army Air Forces built an airport’s original building in 1942. At this time, the airport was used as a training base for military forces and marine recruits. In 1949, Gulfport Field became a civil airport and began providing passenger flights with Southern Airways and National Airlines.
During the Cold War, Gulfport Air Force Base opened a new civil-military facility at the Gulfport-Biloxi airport. From the 1970s to 1990s, Southern Airways, Republic Airlines, and Northwest Airlines provided services at the airport.
